Civil Rights

Federal and state civil rights laws protect our core democratic rights and are intended to apply broadly, to everyone in our country. They include the rights to free speech, liberty, due process, freedom from excessive force and false arrest, the right to vote, and the right to be free from unlawful discrimination.

At Sniderman Law, we know that a violation of a person’s civil rights is one of the most serious indignities they can suffer. Mark Sniderman fights aggressively to protect people’s civil rights, holding state actors accountable when they overstep their bounds. We protect the rights of prisoners and pretrial detainees, victims of police misconduct and excessive force, people whose voting rights are being suppressed, and people who have suffered from wrongful discrimination in the workplace. Because these rights are generally protected by the United States Constitution or federal law, we primarily file civil rights lawsuits in federal court.

Medical Care in Indiana Prisons & Jails

Much of our civil rights practice involves representing prisoners challenging their conditions of confinement, including the healthcare they receive or do not receive. When people are no longer free to make their own healthcare choices, jails and prisons are legally obligated to provide medical care. In fact, prisoners and detainees are the only people who have a constitutional right to adequate health care. But some jail and prison healthcare systems are run by private companies that prioritize the interests of their shareholders over their patients. When these systems violate the rights of detainees or prisoners and people are harmed as a result, we seek to hold them accountable.

Excessive Force

Law enforcement officers are bound by the Constitution’s prohibitions against unreasonable searches and seizures and excessive force. If you have been subjected to excessive force, false arrest, or malicious prosecution, your civil rights may have been violated, and you may be entitled to compensation for bodily injuries, damage to your reputation, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

Voting Rights

The right to vote is fundamental to the democratic process. When people are disenfranchised and their right to vote is compromised, Sniderman Law fights to protect the right to vote. Attorney Sniderman offers advice, guidance, and legal representation to organizations and people whose voting rights have been infringed.

Employment Discrimination

Civil rights laws make it illegal to discriminate against an employee or potential employee on the basis of their sex, gender, race, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or pregnancy. When employers violate the civil rights of their employees, lawsuits can be brought to recover damages for lost wages, denial of benefits, denial of employment, or termination.

First Amendment Protections

The First Amendment protects our rights to free speech, freedom of association, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and the free exercise of religion. When state actors punish people for the content of their speech or assembling together to advocate for justice, we hold them accountable.

Sniderman Law: Seeking Justice for All

There are certain basic human rights we should all be able to expect in the United States: the right to receive medical treatment that will not harm us, the right to vote and have our voices heard, the right to due process, and the right to be free from unlawful discrimination.

When these rights aren’t honored, the only recourse is to take legal action. Mark Sniderman has spent his legal career advocating for people whose civil rights have been violated. He understands the complexities of this area of the law and works tirelessly to ensure your voice is heard and your rights are protected.
